Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)

ICSI involves the direct injection of a single spermatozoon intracytoplasmically into a mature oocyte.


On the day of egg collection the oocytes are retrieved from the ovaries and are prepared for subsequent injection. Sperm sample is collected and prepared in the Laboratory. The ICSI procedure is performed under a microscope with the use of multiple micromanipulation devices. Each mature oocyte is injected with a single spermatozoon. Fertilization is scored after 18-22 hours. The embryos that develop are observed and monitored for 3-5/6 days until embryo replacement to the uterine cavity.


The introduction of intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) has revolutionized treatment of male infertility.The ICSI method is an option for couples with a history of failed fertilization during an IVF cycle, or for couples that have a low sperm count and quality including:

• Oligozoospermia (low sperm count)
• Asthenozoospermia (low sperm motility)
• Teratozoospermia (high percentage of abnormal morphological characteristics)
• Azoospermia (no spermatozoa in the ejaculation)
• In case of azoospermia where the retrieval of live fertile spermatozoa from the testis is performed through surgical procedures (TESA, MESA, PESA, TESE)

Natural Cycle - Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (NC - ICSI):


NC-ICSI can also be performed without any stimulation of the ovaries by using and monitoring the single follicle that has developed naturally. This particular procedure is complemented by both the oocyte recovery and embryo transfer procedures.
